Selangor EXCO may get Toyota Camry
This is from Friday 25th July 2008 The star
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Government is now hinting that it may choose the Toyota Camry as the official cars for its state executive councillors.
State executive councillor for Local Government, Studies and Research Ronnie Liu said the choice was appropriate as the price of the car was reasonable and maintenance cost not high.
“Personally, I feel the Toyota Camry is the best choice and have made the suggestion to the Mentri Besar (Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim).
“However, he has not made a decision. But I feel there won’t be any objection as the Toyota Camry is much cheaper than the Mercedes,” he told reporters here yesterday. – Bernama

Mercedes is cheaper to maintain ?

It was reported that the Terengganu state government has purchased 14 units of the Mercedes E200 Kompressor costing RM245,000 each (Taxless). (Rm 3,430 000 in total)
Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the state government had planned to purchase the cars for a long time now to replace its Proton Perdana V6 Executive fleet in a move to cut cost.
“Proton Perdanas go through continuous long-distance journeys. It's costing us a lot of money due to high cost of maintenance. “We are not saying that the national car is not good but in reality we are coughing up more money for maintaining the Proton Perdanas, particularly the gear boxes,” he said.
Ahmad cited the example of the Proton Perdana of state Commerce, Industry and Environment committee chairman Toh Chin Yaw, which has twice undergone expensive repairs to the tune of RM50,000 in the last 36 months.
"In the long run, Mercedes cars are cheaper to maintain and could also save us fuel costs.
“This is the state’s long-term plan – we are farsighted. The cars could also fetch a high market price when sold as second-hand cars.
"We had evaluated from all angles before deciding to buy the Mercedes E200 cars,” he added.
Ahmad also denied that the oil royalty money was used to buy the cars.
"In the first place we have yet to receive the oil royalty from the Federal Government.
“The funds to procure the cars were from our own coffers and has nothing to do with the oil royalty money,” he said.
X-seelan ;
I didnt know that Mercedes cars are cheaper to maintain compared to Perdana V6. Probably Perdana V6 is expensive to maintain because it is MADE IN MALAYSIA. " I guess i have been dumb of using Kancil 850EX. I guess i should book a Mercedes E200 today
If its gonna cost RM50,000 to repair and maintain. Then be smart sell and buy another Perdana V6. I am sure its cheaper.
We are not saying that the national car is not good... ? Then what is good?
If you going to buy a car that have low maintenance . Taxfree somemore. I suggest you to get a Toyota Camry 2.0E which cost only RM 85,022.31 (Labuan Price which is taxfree) or perhaps even Toyota Camry 2.4V which is the full specs at RM98,742.60.
If you are talking about saving fuel Toyota Camry runs on a VVTi ( Variable Valve Timing with intelligence) Engine which is design to provide speed and also save fuel. No doubt that In the United States, the Camry's largest consumer market, it has been the best selling car for nine of the last ten years starting in 1997, with the only exception being 2001. (Source Wikipedia)

Let us do some simple maths ;
RM 85,022.31 x 14 = RM 1, 190, 321.34
RM 3, 430, 000 - RM 1, 190 321.34 = RM 2, 239, 678.66
With the balance money you can buy a least another 26 Toyota Camry 2.0E, and they can give me 1 for giving this idea. ;)

30 Ways to Save Fuel
I was going through Youtube and i found this video. I do hope that this few tips would help you guys to save on fuel. I am sure most people including myself having a hard time coping with the fuel hike. I use roughly 1000 per month for fuel, toll, parking. Guess what i am only a student and i am driving a Perodua Kancil 850 EX.
Full tank for kancil is now RM70.00 ;(

How To Save Fuel
• Drive at moderate speed. In highway driving, over 50% of the power produced by the engine is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. Drag and thus fuel consumption increases rapidly at speeds above 90km/h. On the average, a car uses about 15% more fuel at 100km/h, and 25% more fuel at 110km/h compared to when it is doing only 90km/h.
• Clean the air-filter regularly. Clogged air filters increase fuel consumption by restricting airflow to the engine, and thus should be cleaned/replaced when necessary. Clogged air filters can increase fuel consumption by up to 10%.
• Start up the car properly. With today's cars, it is not necessary to prime the engine first by pumping the accelerator pedal repeatedly. Do not crank the engine excessively. This only wastes fuel. When starting the engine, idle it no more than 30 seconds to warm it up. An engine will warm up faster on the road. However, avoid sudden acceleration before the engine has warmed up sufficiently.
• Travel light. Avoid carrying any unnecessary weight in your car. On the average, every 50kg added load in your car will increase fuel consumption by 2%.
• Drive in high gear (overdrive). The engine runs most efficiently between around 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. To maintain these low revs you should change up through the gears as soon as practical and before the revs reach 2500 rpm. For automatic transmission cars, you should always switch on your overdrive to help saving fuel.
• Anticipate traffic ahead. A driver can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10% by anticipating traffic conditions ahead and adjusting the speed accordingly, and avoiding tailgating and thus unnecessary braking and acceleration.
• Avoid strong acceleration. Go easy on your right foot guys. The fuel consumption remains at a minimum during steady driving at a moderate speed of about 90km/h. Keep in mind that every time the accelerator is hard pressed, the engine goes into a "fuel-enrichment" mode of operation that wastes fuel. The vehicle should always be gradually and smoothly accelerated.
• Minimise aerodynamic drag. Additional parts on the exterior of a vehicle such as roof racks and spoilers, or having the window open, Roof racks are bad for fuel economy increases air resistance and fuel consumption, in some cases by over 20%.
• Don't let your engine idle. Minimize fuel wasted in idling by stopping the engine whenever your car is stopped or held up for an extended period of time. Idling more than a minute consumes much more fuel than restarting the engine.
• Use the air-con sparingly. Air conditioners can use about 10 per cent extra fuel when operating. However, at speeds of over 80 km/h, use of air conditioning is better for fuel economy than an open window for an open window increases wind drag, increasing the overall aerodynamic drag of your car
Are you an engineer ?
How do you know if you are an engineer?
You know you are an engineer when,
- You have no life - and you can PROVE it mathematically.
- You know vector calculus but you can't remember how to do long division.
- You laugh your heads off at jokes about mathematicians.
- You've even calculated how much you make per second.
- Your favorite James Bond character is "Q," the guy who makes the gadgets.
- You have a habit of destroying things in order to see how they work.
- You have never backed up your hard drive
- You'll assume that a "horse" is a "sphere" in order to make the math easier.
Engineers and the other half of the half empty-half full theory.
To the optimist, the glass is half full; To the pessimist, the glass is half empty.
To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.(now, that makes sense!)
